Velo
Hello.
Here I or Cats will keep you updated about Velo.
I will probably merge this topic with Lonewolf's topic too.
Anyway, I have during some time now been thinking of how Velo might act.
This have been troublesome since we do want the operating system to work good (Or great) on older systems, but we do NOT want it look like DSL, which means we want it to be visually appealing too.
So I have been trying out several programs (a crapload of programs to be more precise) and there are a few that have appealed to me.
One is a dock called Cairo, this is not the dock used in the screenshots further down, I liked it, it was easy to customize and so on, on the minus side it had some irritating rendering glitches. So I tried Avant Window Navigator (the one shown below) and it works great. There isn't as many modes to it as Cairo, but the fact that it is almost glitch-free makes me happy.
So some widgets/gadgets/desklets then?
Well, the one shown below is called gDesklets, currently I'm only running a clock since that was one of the few things i was missing. I have tried Screenlets too, but they didn't appeal to me in the same way. I guess I will have to develop some good desklets for it too...
Here are the screenshots of the interface I ended up with.
It is VERY lightweight, and it is somewhat visually appealing.
The fact that all this is run on 256MB RAM, 800MHz CPU and 32MB GPU with a old S3 Savage4 is according to me quite close to what we visioned.
And the last image is the wallpaper i created going with this desktop, download if you want.
Oh and the following screenshots are using my (Dojan5's) theme called Velo Fusion.
I will post Velo Impulse screenies as soon as cats send me a new wallpaper.
And I have no idea if this is to Cats's liking or not, well have to see.
===UPDATE 3===
This is Velo Impulse theme (Cats's theme)
===EDIT===
On a second thought i will leave them split,
I wanted this post to be the first one so i could edit it for updates.
However, it will be moved to technology forum leaving a shadow topic here.
===UPDATE 1===
I created a new login theme.
The preview is not how it actually looks, it doesnt have any buttons or anything, so you will have to see when you try (Or when i fix a real screenie), but that is somewhat how it looks.
===UPDATE 2===
Fixed the cursor theme, it works now.
Im just waiting for the idle cursor from cats and that too is done...
===UPDATE 4===
Added a development diary. Working on a new Web Layout.

Re: Velo
Yes it would.hellblade wrote:looks cool
Would it run on my computer - 512mb ram, 533mhz cpu, 32mb vid card
If i find out how to enable Metacity by default it will run really fast too.
Else you would have black boxes all around the dock and yuck.
But it will most likely run on your computer yes.

Re: Velo
Haha. Would you compile and install a virus?hellblade wrote:unless it has a virus
Plus there is only around 300 viruses for Linux.
And it will be able to play games.
It will probably include WINE for the sake of simplicity.
Oh and yeah, i have decided to start up a developer diary.
I'll let you know more later.

And well, to do any vital harm to the system you would need super user privileges, and to gain that, you have to enter a password. To get the password you need to find a encrypted file and decrypt it. To do that, you need root privileges. So, good luck with that.
I know one anti virus for Linux, doubt no one ever used it.
And for now, Gone Compiling.
